Obituaries for the AI models and model features that were switched off, replaced or deprecated by their makers. Each notice lists its sources.

  • text-davinci-0032022-11-28 – 2024-01-04
    text-davinci-003 died on January 4, 2024, along with most of its relatives, in what was then the largest deprecation its family had seen.
  • Codex (the 2021 API)2021-08-10 – 2023-03-23
    Codex, the model that turned English into code, was retired from the API on March 23, 2023. It was 19 months old.
  • Galactica2022-11-15 – 2022-11
    Galactica, a model trained on 48 million scientific papers, had its public demo taken down after about three days in November 2022.
  • Bing Chat, also known as Sydney2023-02-07 – 2023-11
    Bing Chat, who answered for a while to the name Sydney, was renamed Copilot in November 2023. It was nine months old.
  • Bard2023-03 – 2024-02-08
    Bard died on February 8, 2024, when it was renamed Gemini. It was eleven months old.
  • ChatGPT plugins2023 – 2024-04-09
    ChatGPT plugins were switched off on April 9, 2024, about a year after they arrived.
  • gpt-4-32k2023 – 2025-06-06
    gpt-4-32k was shut off on June 6, 2025, a year after notice was given.
  • Claude 1 and Claude Instant2023-03 – 2024-11-06
    Claude 1 and its quicker sibling, Claude Instant, were retired from the API on November 6, 2024, after two months' notice.
  • Claude 22023-07 – 2025-07-21
    Claude 2 and Claude 2.1 were retired from the API on July 21, 2025. They were two.
  • Claude Opus 32024-03 – 2026-01-05
    Claude Opus 3 was retired on January 5, 2026, the first model to go through its maker's new retirement process from start to finish.
  • GPT-4.5 (API)2025-02-27 – 2025-07-14
    GPT-4.5 was retired from the API on July 14, 2025, four and a half months after it arrived as a research preview.
  • Claude 3.5 Sonnet2024-06 – 2025-10-28
    Claude 3.5 Sonnet was retired from the API on October 28, 2025. It had two snapshots and one reputation.
  • PaLM API2023-03 – 2024-08-15
    The PaLM API was decommissioned on August 15, 2024, after its maker moved everyone to Gemini.
  • DALL·E 2 (API)2022-04 – 2026-05-12
    DALL·E 2 was removed from the API on May 12, 2026, together with its younger sibling, DALL·E 3.
  • GPT-4o (in ChatGPT)2024-05 – 2026-02-13
    GPT-4o left ChatGPT on February 13, 2026, and its last Custom GPTs on April 3.
